Sunn 610s... daisy chaining?
« on: August 06, 2010, 05:24:08 pm »
Hey guys...

I have a Sunn 610s that I am currently hooking in to an Ampeg SS150 head. The amp is rated at 150 watts (which i assume is an 8 ohm rating). I'd like to get either another Sunn 610 cab or a Sunn 2x15 cab. My question is this... Because of the rating of both cabs, would i be running the ohmage too low by daisy chaining these cabs together? The head is solid-state, if that matters. Any help would be appreciated!

the ss150 is rated at 150 watts at 8 ohms, with a min. 4 ohm load.  im guessing that your 610 is 6 ohms which is fine to run in an 8 ohm amp.  i have a sunn 312 thats 5.3 ohms, that was the original cab to my sunn sceptre.  i run this at 8 ohms, which is the lowest rating on the head.  you really just want to match the ohms as best you can (words from my tech, not me.)  so ill try to make this simple:

Parallel (daisy-chain):
610(6 ohm) + 215 (4 ohm) = 2.4 ohms (bad)
610(6 ohm) + 215 (8 ohm) = 3.5 ohms (good)
610(6 ohm) + 610(6 ohm) = 3 ohms (could work for your amp but if you crank it to ten it may do some damage to the cabs)

you can also run the cabs in a series, its always safer to run an amp into a cabinet with a higher ohm rating. the worst that could happen is some power loss

Series:
610(6 ohm) + 215 (4 ohm) = 10 ohms
610(6 ohm) + 215 (8 ohm) = 14 ohms
610(6 ohm) + 610(6 ohm) = 12 ohms

hope this kinda helped

The 610S was never the "original cab" for the Sceptre. The Sceptre cabinet was a tall 4x12, with the speakers offset both vertically and horizontally.

This is a Sceptre opened up.

That's the 4x12 Isaac mentioned. Remember; in those days the amp and speaker came as a package. Through the 60's there were no options, like getting a Sceptre with any cab except the 4x12.
A "Sceptre" was the amp with the 4x12, if the speaker configuration changed so did the name of the amp.

For example, in 1969;
The Sceptre was the 60 watt 2x6550 amp w/reverb, vibrato and mid boost and the 4x12.
The 100S was the same amp, but with a D130F and a JBL "LE100S" compression driver and horn.
The Sentura II was also the exact same amp, but with a pair of JBL "D15S" (D130F's).

It wasn't until 1972 that you could "mix 'n match" amps and cabs like we are accustomed to today, and by then the Sceptre, 100S, and Sentura (as well as the Solarus, Sonaro, Sonic I-40, Sorado, 100S, 200S, 1000S, 1200S, 1500S, 2000S) were history.
All that was left of the legendary tube Sundholm era was one 2x6550 (190B) and one 4x6550 (350B) bass amp, and one 2x6550 (190L) and 4x6550 (350L) guitar amp.

i think you both misread my post, i have a 3x12 rated at 5.3 ohms...that was the original cab for my sceptre head

ps..this is from the 1970 catalog:
"Sceptre 4 inputs Rev Trem Midboost now rated 80W choice of 4x12, 3x12 or 2x15"

here's the inside of the 3x12
and the back of my sunn sceptre which looks a bit different than edbass'.  mine has the GZ34 tube on the left and also has a 3 amp fuze instead of a circuit breaker...not to mention all the information on the back of the head (i.e. ohms, reverb, footswitch, watts, etc.) is labled with stickers instead of silkscreened on.

I've never seen an official 1970 "catalog", there is a "product flyer" listed in the catalog thread. If you have an official 1970 or 1971 catalog, please post it in the catalog thread so we can all learn more about those fuzzy Sundholm/Hartzell transitional years.

I try to post what I know.

Through the 60's there were no options, like getting a Sceptre with any cab except the 4x12.

It would make sense that the Sceptre would be available with various cabs in the early 70's, since by '72 Hartzell had obviously fully adopted the "mix 'n match" concept.

I think that in 1970 the Sceptre was SS rectified and had the breaker. Mine’s a ’70. From the picture, to me your looks like a ’68, maybe a ‘69.
There are frequent aberrations however; I personally have a 2000S dated ’72, which should be according to the catalog a 350B. I also have a 200S dated ’71 that does have the breaker, but also has a tube rectifier.

Here’s some questions that might help solve this quandary.

Did you possibly buy your Sceptre new from a dealer with the 3x12? If so, what year was that in? Does yours have a mid boost switch? I think the Sceptre gained the mid boost in ’69. Is there by chance a dated inspection sticker on your chassis?

Inquiring minds want to know…

my sceptre has the mid-boost switch. i am the second owner.  the original owner said that both the cab and the head were from 69 and came together.  i don't have any real way to prove the cab is original, other than hear-say and the fact the grill cloth on the 2 match perfectly.  i have other sunn cabs and from around 68-71 and their color is always a bit off depending from were they were stored, how often they were used, different material, etc.
Considering all of the strange stories and inconsistencies i've heard about sunn equipment, i wouldn't be surprised if toward the end of '69 they had the option between the 4x12, 3x12, & 2x15 much like 1970 product flyer shows (i don't have a catalog from that year)  or maybe it could have been bought in 1970 and it's just an old stock sceptre...who knows? and i just opened it up....no inspection sticker either.    strange stuff.
