Sunn 610S Cab?
« on: July 07, 2010, 11:12:45 pm »
Hey guys, i'm new to the forum... great to see so many people loving this great old gear.

I just scored a damn near mint Sunn 610S cab from a buddy. I can't find much info on this cab... Can anyone give me an idea of some history on this, i.e. power rating, years of production, speaker type, artists that have used it?

I've got it hooked up to my Marshall VS100 and it sounds brutal!

I'm looking to potentially rewire the cab to stereo so that I can run two heads in an ABY configuration (Marshall VS100 and Randall RG100HT). Is this even possible and what would be the procedure to go about such a rewire?

Thanks

First of all, I wouldn't rewire the cab.  In my opinion, one of the great things about owning Sunn gear is keeping it stock as possible.....and if your cab is in mint condition, you would be doing a great dis-service by altering it.  Why not go out and buy two cheaper cabs - like Carvin, etc., and using those for both of your amps.

I checked the Sunn catalog Thread, and the 610S and 610M, first show up in 1972. As for the power handling, I can't remember exactly, but it seems to me that the 610S cab was rated somewhere around 200 W RMS, and the 610M was a little higher.

In the absence of more reliable information, I'd assume that the drivers can take 25 watts each, for a total of 150 watts. I know that it could handle the full output of a Concert Lead, which was 150 watts at 4 ohms and around 80 at 8 ohms. Impedance is nominally 6 ohms although six 8 ohm drivers actually gives a calculated impedance of 5.3 ohms. Impedance varies quite a bit, though, so I wouldn't quibble about the difference.

haha Nick welcome! I love this forum and find most of my info on it. I'm glad you like the cab.
Each speaker can handle 25watts so 150watts total at 6ohms. The question is when are you really going to putting
any one of your heads to the full wattage? So really no reason to worry. I'm pretty it's wired in stereo as right now but if not I'd be glad to
wire it so you can and also maybe put a switch in for mono/stereo if you really want.
It is the Sunn 610S which was matched with the either the Sunn Model T (tubed) or the Concert Lead but the cab was usually sold separate from the heads.
