Red Knob Lead Question

Do i understand this right. Does it half to have the footswitch to turn on the distort? There is an on off switch. But nothing happens. Does the distort switch work independent from the footswitch? Or is the distort broken? I do not have a 7 pin footswitch.

i have a red knob concert lead, with no footswitch, and my "distort" function works fine. The switch turns it on and off and the knob controls the gain. Even on 10 it never gets that dirty though.
