Safe speakers for Concert Controller 1?
« on: March 01, 2011, 07:48:47 am »
I just got an insane deal on what appears to be a working Concert Controller 1. Problem is, I don't have any speakers. I'm rather poor, so my options are limited, but I'd like to start using the thing.

What I am confused about, I suppose is a little more general, that being how go to about impedance. It says this thing is 4 ohms and 350 Watts (says 400 watts on the actual mixer).

I have access to just one JBL speaker that is 8 ohms and maxes out at 1,000 watts. Will this hurt my power mixer?

Thanks!

I'm not sure if we are talking about the same unit, but my 1972 catalog lists the Concert 1 Controller @ 150 watts RMS.
I don't see a rating for whay impedance that is at, but if it's at 4 ohms, your 8 ohm 1000 Watt Jbl (what model # is that?) will cause it to output aroung half that much power.
I don't see how it could hurt your concert controller though.

You are correct, 150 Watts RMS. Is the 400 (or 350) peak wattage? I sincerely don't have much of a grasp on this (I'm a player, but not much of a gear head).

What would be a good rule of thumb wattage wise for safe speakers?

I'm also noticing a fair amount of bass cabs that are 4 ohms. Would that work out ok?

I would imagine that the 400 watts is power consumption, how much power the device will draw from the AC outlet, not it's output.

I'm not sure what a good rule of thumb would be. Speakers, amplifiers, and opinions vary greatly. Try a search, you'll get plenty of reading material.

I don't know a whole lot about the later transistor Sunns , but I would imagine that the output section is similar/identical to the other "Concert" series amps, and I believe the rating on those was 150 watts @ 4 ohms.
So, if this is correct, a 4 ohm cabinet should work fine; probably better than the 8 ohm JBL you mentioned.

This all makes sense. I guess what I meant by "rule of thumb" was safe wattages to stay within on speakers, is all. Probably an obvious thing to most. Either way, I think I've got it now.

Thank you so much!

That 1000 watts on your JBL speaker is how much power you can put into it. You'll never get close to that with the CC I, so don't worry about it.

The 400 watts is power consumption, as EdBass said, and has nothing to do with how much power the internal amp is putting out.

The internal amp is rated at 150 watts at 4 ohms. IIRC, at 8 ohms, it will put out 80 watts. Again, no possible damage to your JBL.

Many bass speakers are 4 ohms, and they'll be fine with the CC I. However, I long ago tried playing my bass through the CC I had, and it did not sound good. I think the microphone channels are bad limited. I certainly didn't get any low end from it.
