Sunn 610s to 612s?
« on: November 07, 2010, 06:03:24 pm »
First post here.

I just bought what I thought was going to be a 612s cab off of craigslist. When I arrived it ended up being a 610s. Ten inch speakers aren't my thing, but for $40 I figured why not. Anyway, I read in the catalog that the 612s and 610s enclosures are the same size. I am not sure what I am going to do with the cab. I am toying with the idea of converting it to a 612s. I measured the baffle and it seems like 12" speakers would be a bit tight but might fit. I was wondering if anyone knows if the V-shaped speaker baffles on the 612s and 610s are the same size, or if the 612s baffle is wider?

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure the 612 is 30 inches wide & the 610 is 24.

In the 74 catalog there is the 612S listed as 42.5 high, 24 wide, 15 deep. The 612 that came with the 1200S (1968) is 30 inches wide.

The 6x12" cabinet that came with the 1200S is 30" wide. However, the 612S cabinet is the same size as the 610S, the same size as the 215S and the 312S. It was Sunn's standard cabinet for years. Older cabinets were also that size, including the cabinet for the 200S and many other systems.

The main difference between the 610S and the 612S, besides the size of the transducers, is the baffles. The baffles for the 612S are larger, to accommodate the larger transducers, so the angle created by the 612S baffles is smaller. As a result, the 612S has less internal volume than the 610S, and less bass response than the 610S.

If you want to enlarge the holes in the baffles to accommodate 12" drivers, and there's room, well, it's your cabinet.

Radish, where are you located?  I would potentially be interested in swapping the 610 for my 612S, assuming the condition was solid and original.

This might be a long shot, but I thought I'd put it out there.

xsolarusx, I am in Denver, CO. This cab needs some work. One of the previous owners spray painted the grill cloth and there is no Sunn badge. One of the speakers is torn as well... Sounds like you wouldn't be interested in a trade. In the off chance you are, drop me a PM and I can snap some photos for you.

I think I may end up passing it along. It sounds like converting it to a 612s is more effort then I want to put in. I'm sure I can at least make my money back.

Yeah, probably not worth the trade, but if you're planning on selling, drop me a message.  I'm sure I know a few people in toronto who might want that cab.
