Coliseum Lead 4x12 speakers
« on: October 04, 1999, 10:57:00 am »
One or more of my CL cab speakers is dead.  What was the power rating of the original Sunn Transducers in my box?  I'm looking for a good fairly-matched aftermarket replacment.  Any suggestions?

Thanks much,
Geoff

Hey Jeff,  Find out the specs and go shoppin' on e-bay.  Search under Sunn and you'll see plenty of speakers come thru over a relatively short period of time. (but maybe you don't have the time to wait).
Eminence made Sunn transducers (Conrad told me so!) but from my somewhat limited experience, nothing sounds just like a Sunn Transducer (because of manufacturing specs) but a Sunn Transducer.

I just bought two 10" Suns on ebay for around 40.00 total.  They sound great.

You might just want to see if they (your current speakers) could be repaired.

I'm beginning to think it would be a good idea to try to get them repaired.  Nobody seems to know any specs on these speaks.  I suspect mine are 16 ohm because there's 4 and its a 4 ohm cab (assuming parallel wiring).  But I don't know about power handling capacity or what aftermarket speakers might sounds similar.  Anybody??

Hello,
I worked for Sunn untill 1984 when Fender bought them out. Originally the 4x12 cabinet came with PN# 81-0126 speakers. They were 8ohm speakers wired in series-parallel, had 1.5" voice coils, 30oz magnets and handled 60watts RMS. They had a thin cloth mesh dust cap that allowed a biting high end with smooth mids. Ted Nugent used to load his 4x12 cabinets with 2 Celestion and 2 Sunn speakers he claimed that the Sunns produced warmer mids and the Celestions produced more crunch. These were great speakers used in many guitar products (Stagemasters, Stingers, Beta).
