Sunn Transducer 1216G for bass?
« on: December 23, 2010, 10:56:54 pm »
I have a 3x12 cab with these speakers in them and I assumed the cab was meant for bass. Upon lurking the catalog thread I see the 3x12 with the transducers under the "Lead" section, seperate from the "Bass" section.  The cab is 180 watts and it would be used with a 130 watt solid state bass head. I've used it with a bass before, before I realized what speakers were in it and it did fine. Are they safe for bass? As long as I don't use a high power bass head should they be ok?

The 1216 is a guitar driver. That's what the G at the end stands for. That doesn't mean that you can't use it for bass, though. However, the 1216G doesn't have a lot of throw (Xmax), so it can't move a lot of air. You won't get a lot of low bass out of it, and, if you were to try, you'd likely damage the drivers. They'd make some ugly sounds first, though.

So, if you like the sound you're getting from them, go ahead and use them. If they start to sound stressed, back off on the bass or volume, or maybe both.
