Sunn Colisseum 300 help!
« on: December 06, 2010, 05:30:22 am »
So the bassist in my band just got hold of a broken Sunn Colisseum 300, apparently the preamp has given out due to a loose transistor which caused all the power to run through it at once pretty much blowing it, it switches on but obviously no sound comes out. Has anyone had this happen to them? And is it fixable?. I'm guessing he needs to get a whole new preamp out of another Colisseum? But if anyone knows anything different it would be a huge help.

Thanks!

I'm working on a 300 right now with a similar problem. The transistor that failed was part of the regulator for the +- 15V supply to the preamp. Unfortunately, this failure damages the voltage controlled amplifier IC (SSM2013) which hasn't been available since the 1990's. The power amp (if it is okay) is still usable but rebuilding the preamp might not be worth the cost.

Thanks for the reply man. I'm not entirely sure which transistor caused the problem, and what has been damaged on the preamp. Think he's going to get it checked out pretty soon. Its gonna be a shame if it can't be fixed since he got hold of it for practically nothing. Maybe he can just use is as a power amp haha.

You may be able to plug into the back and rock. Try the "Power Amp In" jack, I think this bypasses the pre.

Yes, plugging into the power amp in disconnects the preamp. A Coliseum power amp for "practically nothing" is still a pretty good deal.
