2x15" cab not working - help!
« on: April 15, 2011, 09:04:55 pm »
hi, been a sunn user for many years now because of the tone but am a bit lacking in the mechanical/repair department (fortunately never needed to be!) so please bear with me... blew the power while playing a few days ago and have not been able to get any sound at all from my favorite 70s era 2x15" ever since. pulled the grill off and all connections seem to be in tact (possibly even original), speakers (original) still look great, no bad smells, head works fine with other cabs, etc - what am i missing? would prefer to save taking it into the shop as a last resort. i love the way this thing sounds (sounded  :x ), everything looks immaculate, would hate to have to start replacing things... is there any hope?

You need to check if the speaker cones still move and aren't seized, and also need to make sure the voice coils aren't open with a multimeter.

Hook the multimeter up the the drivers individually and see what resistance they measure. If one or both of them acts like the meter isn't hooked up at all, or shows something wacky you likely have an issue with the voice coil(s). They should read just under the impedance that the speakers are rated for in DC resistance.
