Sunn 415M (I think)
« on: May 05, 2011, 01:07:25 pm »
I was trolling the Kustom site mash just now and came across the following:

Having owned one myself, that's no Kustom 415! However, a previous owner must have thought that ugly K was a stylish addition!

  I'd say that it's a Sunn 4 x 15",but how about that Peavey Super Festival Series head,you don't see a lot of those around these days.If I remember right,they made 2 models,a 200 watt and a 400 watt,all tube,6550's/KT88's for outputs,early 70's I think.Those amps sounded pretty good,the idea was an amp that could handle guit./bass/or keys,the cabs had 4 x 12" and a large radial horn,ouch !!

I'd like to have one of those myself. There's no substitute for horsepower!

The biggest amp I remember using from that era was a Coral Kilowatt with two 8 x 12" cabs.,hybrid amp with a tube preamp and transistor power amp stage,1000 watts P-P,was around 410 watts RMS,speaker cables were odd,had a 3 pin Cinch Jones connector on them and were hard wired to the cab,you coiled them up and stuffed them in this hole in the back of the cab !!

Not so sure it's a Sunn cab. It appears to not have the thicker wood front that Sunns are know for but I'm sure it still sounds pretty badass with that amp on top.

It is certainly the Sunn design, but it may not be as tall (hard to tell from the photo).

That cabinet is NOT as tall as the Sunn cabinet, but sure is built similarly. Guess the Kustom guys were scrambling to keep up then and started copying other manufacturers ... once they abandoned Naugahyde, their gear just wasn't as cool.
