I didn't read this whole thread, but I do have an amusing story about Hendrix and Sunn amps.
I got to know a guy named Bud Garrison pretty well in the 80's as he was a rep for Guild/Hartke which I sold in my store. Anyway, Bud had been in manufacturing and design of musical equipment for 30+ years before becoming a rep, and he had been heavily involved in artist product promotion for Sunn. One of his jobs in the 60's involved getting big name artists to use the Sunn amplifiers he helped to engineer. Bud told me he personally delivered and set up amps for Jimmy H at several concerts.
On one particular occasion, as Bud explained it, he had delivered and set up 8- 200 watt Sunn custom built amps that were designed specifically for Jimmy. This was at a huge outdoor gig (I can't remember where he said it was). Also, Bud was in charge of running sound (Sunn supplied the PA, too). According to Bud, Jimmy played around with the amps for 20 minutes at sound check trying to get a good tone and he became frustrated because the amps wouldn't distort or break up. Eventually, Jimmy became so disgusted with the tone, he walked over to the mike and said to the people in the audience, "Sunn amplifiers are the shittiest sounding amps in the world."
