Pricing - 2000s Sunn head
« on: August 24, 2011, 12:27:16 am »
How would a 2000s Sunn head go for if it's in good working order? I ask because I have found a couple online but there are some overpriced stuff out there.

As is well known, unfounded price speculation is one of my pet peeves. Not just musical gear; cars, vintage gear, pretty much anything used or vintage. Since I actively deal in such things, "armchair quarterbacks*" spouting out numbers off the top of their heads have cost me a bunch of cash over the years.
In my personal experiences, such boastful pseudo-expertise is generally inflationary, so I try to deal in real numbers instead of trying to act like I'm some kind of “gear guru” in order to impress other members on an internet forum with how "savvy" I am about gear.

So that said here's some recent REAL numbers, as well as my personal opinion (based on how I conduct my personal transactions) on used 2000S's

Solid state rectified, claimed in A1 Condition, sold on 8/18 for $1,100

Tube rectified, also claimed freshly retubed and excellent, sold on 8/17 for $1,200

Probably SS rectified, original tubes, grounded cord, with an AlNiCo SRO loaded Dual Showman cab, sold for $1500 on 8/12. This was maybe a real "steal" IMO; depending on the condition of the tubes and shipping logistics/cost.

In the last couple of years, 2000S's have sold for as low a $700-$800 and as high as $2200. Since 2008 they have averaged around $1100, so IMO I'd say that should be the "magic number", under that it's a buyer's market and over that it's a seller's market but of course it could quickly and dramatically swing either direction. Basic economics; if it swings way low I start looking to buy, way high I look to sell.
In the middle I just watch and wait…   :-D

*By my definition anyone who posts their “learned opinion” without; A) having one for sale themselves, B) have cash in hand to buy one, or C) has hard actual sales data to back up their “expert” opinion.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I found one that looks great and is supposed to be in perfect working condition. He's asking $1,400, but I'm sure I can ask him to knock off a couple hundred dollars or so for me.
