Sunn 412L for Bass?
« on: June 11, 2012, 03:40:12 pm »
Hey guys.

I have a full stack of Sunn 412L's. It's pretty neat. All original, and all that jazz. 160 watts each, 8ohms.

I was wondering: would it be possible for me to use these cabs as bass cabs? I would be running a Sunn Coliseum Bass (original) through the cabs. Is that too much power? Would they not be able to handle it?

Possible? Sure. Would it sound good? I dunno. Would depend a lot on what sounds good to you. Would it be a good idea? Again, I dunno. I think, if you tried to get too much low end out of them, you might push the drivers beyond their excursion limits. That would sound bad, and could very well damage them. If you prefer a more midrangey sound, light on the low bass, they'd probably be fine.

Try it and see, and then post your results for others to share. Use your ears to gauge how well the drivers are holding up, if they start sounding distressed I'd back her down before "distressed" turns into "broken".

Are these the same 412's you are selling in the classified section?

yes, since it seems like nobody wants them :'(  I've decided to assign new uses for them. my bass rig has been lacking, and I was going for a more midrange-y attack.

however, I will probably not use them on bass for a while, until I am certain that selling them would not be possible

In the car business they say "There's an ass for every seat". I'm sure somebody wants them; the challenge is finding that somebody.

I was curious as to how they would sound for bass.

Well, I believe that the Coliseum is 320-500 watts RMS?

two 160 watt speaker cabs ought to work within that range, right? Is my math off?

Didn't John Entwistle use 412L's at some point?

Coliseums are, IIRC, 300 wrms, not 500. Power per se shouldn't be a problem, but excursion could be.
