JBL D 155 ??
« on: June 29, 2013, 10:47:27 pm »
I've come across what appears to be a 215S cab that reportedly has the original JBL's in it that have never been removed from the cab.  Oddly enough, said to be JBL D155 16 ohm 15 inch speakers.  Pictures bear that info out.  I've never heard of such a speaker, nor can I find anything on the internet.  Anybody know anything on these?

The only thing I can find is an E155-4 E155-8 and 2155-H. No D155.

I don't recall the 215S being available with JBLs, either. IIRC, it was available as the 215S, with Sunn Transducers, or the 215M, with Magna drivers.

And Cerwin Vega in the 215V. Also, I have a 215S that I got with D140F's. I'm not the original owner, but I got it from a guy who got it as part of an endorsement deal in the early 70's. He told me that he specifically requested the D140F's and voilĂ , that's what Sunn sent him.
I think Sunn would pretty much load up whatever their endorsers drivers, I've heard tales of Altec loaded cabs even in the Conrad days.
Never seen one though.
For what it's worth I've never heard of a D155 either but if there is such a thing I would sure like to get a gander at it! Can you post some of those pics bigo?

The D-15-S was essentially a D-130 16 ohm that Sunn got from JBL. Might have been some minor difference in the voice coil or the magnetic structure.

I'll bet that is exactly what it is 'thud, D155 is pretty close to D15S. An easy "typo"!

I believe that LT has solved the mystery.  I've examined the pics of the speakers and upon closer look, 15S is what's on them.  The seller misread since there is such a closeness in the 5 and S.  Cab looks good in the pics.  I'm assuming that this cab would be more for guitar than bass if the 15S is related to the 130F as stated.  Here's the CL link  qkhz5-3903307744@sale.craigslist.org  or if that fails, it's on the Greensboro, NC CL listed 6/29/13.  Thanks for all of the help and particularly to loudthud for his Sherlock revealing.

FWIW, a lot of people prefer the D130 over the D140 for bass. I'm not one of them, but I've used D130s for bass. They're okay, but not enough bottom for me.

In short, it would probably be fine for bass. And who plays guitar through 15"s anymore, anyway?
