Might retire my 200S
« on: March 15, 2014, 12:12:58 pm »
I decided to experiment with my bass rig. I dug through my piles o'crap and pulled out a Peavey T. B. Raxx preamp and a Pyramid PA1000X power amp. Hooked them up to my 200S cabinet, and was quite pleased. the preamp has both pre- and post-gain tone controls, and the low end is a bit tighter, probably due to the higher damping factor of the solid state power amp. More power, too. Sounds as though I have a new bass rig.

Now, what about the speakers...

I sold the 200S I had a couple years ago....decided to downsize my Sunn stuff. That said, I still have an early 2000S and early 2000S cabinet that I will not get rid of. I still need to rebuild the head when I get some time but it works fine and sounds great. Someone gave me a SS Trace Elliot bass preamp that needs some work...but I will probably fix it and sell it rather than get rid of the Sunn. I sold my vintage SVT and fridge cabinet too. Needed money and space.

Another rehearsal, another opinion. One of our guitarists has been on vacation and hadn't heard my new amp until today. He agrees, it sounds great.

I think my next step is to build a cabinet for the components. A cheap, tacky homemade rack, with room for a couple more devices, such as an EQ or crossover.

It's official. Used the new rig last night at the gig. Played my Mapleglo Ric with stock high gain pickups through the 'new' component amp into the Sunn Model 215 with the JBL drivers. It's a small room, so I kept the volume down, but the flexibility of the preamp allowed me to kick the lows up enough to get a really solid low end without it being too loud overall and without making it sound too thick in the low midrange. There was something in the chain that lacked just a little: it was impressively solid down to the low G, but lost a little below that. The only differences from rehearsal, where that didn't happen, were the room and the cabinet, so I'm inclined to think that it's not the bass or the amp that was lacking.

AND IT SOUNDED AWESOME! The volume was constant all the way up the neck, solid but not overpowering. The low notes made the floor vibrate. Best sounding rig I've ever played through, and I have ideas to make it even better.

You should try my 2000S and cab once I overhaul it.

Glad you are liking your new rig though...its always nice to find new gear you can use!

the thing is, I've had these pieces for years. I'm kicking myself for not doing this a long time ago. Although, if I had, I might not have put the effort into getting the 200S up to speed.
