JBL Badges
« on: March 04, 2015, 09:45:48 am »
Bought a cab that had a JBL badge and wondering if anyone else has come across the same thing? Not sure if this might have been a short lived thing Sunn was doing in 69 or if it was added by an owner. Thanks!

I've never seen that before, my guess is that it was added by a previous owner.
Also, based on the grill cloth that cab looks to be older than '69. What model cab is that?

Thanks for the response Ed. It's a single 1x15 24x24x15 cab that came with a Sonic 1-40.

I've got the same I-40 cab, but without the ® on the logo plate. It's got a 1968 grease pencil marking on the inside of the cab. I pulled the D140 and replaced it with a K140 so I could pound on it a little harder testing big amps.

No "JBL" badges or holes where there was one on mine though.

That JBL badge looks exactly like the one that came on Fenders in the late 60's early 70's.  They are available in reproductions.  My guess would be someone added it, since like others, I've never see one on a Sunn.

Actually, I just never removed it. I got that Ric in trade from a friend who bought it new but never could get comfortable with her, he had the thumb rest added in pursuit of that goal.
I ended up selling it off myself, probably a year or so ago during a "don't use it-sell it" purge. I had no problems with playability, with the exception that it the only bass I've ever had that would snag my wedding ring on the edge of the fretboard, and it sounded great, but it never left the house.

Of course, whenever the subject comes up I kinda wish I still had it...
I'll probably end up buying another one, regretfully it wouldn't be the first time I've done that.

Same here. Unfortunately, I expect to be asked to appear on Hoarders next season. :(

Yep. I have this same exact cabinet with a JBL D-140, but no JBL badge. I too suspect this badge was owner-applied.
Nice rig EdBass!!! I have a '94 AVRI Jazz Bass and a 1960 Precision, both with flatwounds. Love 'em!

Thanks, but I'm afraid that old JBL would pop like a zit if I ever were to try to gig with that configuration! That setup was just for comparing preamp response between the Reeves C225 and then under development C400 with a variety of basses.
Those are both MIA Fenders, nothing vintage or special. The Jazz wears Stainless Roto's and the P wears LaBella Flats. Very different flavors, but both delicious; I call the P "Thumper" for obvious reasons.
Those are the two that I take to 99% of gigs, I can cover a lot of sonic ground with that pair!
