How to remove death cap in Sunn Model T?
« on: March 27, 2015, 10:20:18 pm »
I have a first generation model T coming that has been serviced and ready to go. But, for some reason the tech left the death cap in it stating it shouldn't matter since it is a 3 prong AC cord. Is this correct?  If not I don't really want to take it to my tech if it is just as simple as clipping it out and maybe disconnecting the polarity switch. Is there something more to this that I will need to do or is it even something I should worry about?
I tried a search and couldn't really find answers specific to a model T that came from the factory with a 3 prong plug.

I should note I am WELL aware of the dangers inside tube amps. Just wanted to put that out there so no one feels obligated to post the usual warnings. Thanks!

You can leave it in or take it out. The three-wire cord supplies a safety ground to the chassis, so if the death cap blows, the amp will blow a fuse or a breaker. One side of the line will be shorted to the chassis. It does add a point of potential failure, so if you're sure you know which cap it is, there's no reason not to remove it. When I remove parts from my vintage amp, I save them in case a subsequent owner wants them for whatever reason. I doubt there will be a subsequent owner in my lifetime.

I don't understand the question. You just remove it. Desolder it or clip the leads.

Well, I guess that IS my question... Do you just snip it out of there and do nothing else? I believe it hooks to the polarity switch. Does this effectively also take the polarity switch out of the circuit or do I just snip some other wires that connect to it?  Thanks for the help so far, it makes me feel better that at least it won't shock the heck outta me!

When the amp is set up for three-wire operation, the polarity switch has no purpose. Just remove the cap, and live with the useless switch.

Of course, there are other things one could do with it. On my 200S, I wired it to remove the feedback loop. However, I don't find that to be a useful mod, so I'm going to remove it. Greg (SoundmasterG) used his as a ground lift switch. Useful, in some situations, but a lot of work to make it happen.

Thanks for the help!  I was just concerned that it would be different since the Model T came stock with a 3 prong AC plug AND a polarity switch.

If I'm wrong, someone will come along and set me straight in short order, but I don't see any issues.
