Help ID'ing year, model, value?
« on: April 20, 2016, 01:50:48 pm »
through some dumb luck i ended up with a vintage sunn 2x15 cabinet. not sure exactly what year it is from and am hoping that someone on here can help me out with it. i believe that it is from the 70's and i think it's a 215s but i know very little about sunn amps and am having difficulty finding info online. there's no plate with identification info on the back of the cab, like i've seen in other photos of similar ones. the only number is stamped on the inside where it says "S-6371." also trying to figure out an approximate value for this. it is in good working order and a side from some stains and the tolex lifting in a few areas it is in great shape.

here's three photos to help...

It doesn't look like a real Sunn cabinet.

The 215S had a vertical port. This one is horizontal, so it's not a 215S. The 200S cabinet had a horizontal port, but the port ran the full width of the cabinet and had the additional pieces that gave it the "folded horn" configuration. This port does not go full width, and it doesn't seem to have the additional pieces, so I'm sure it's not a 200S. The only other 2x15" configuration I know of (that isn't a variation on one of the above) has dual circular ports, which this one does not. So yeah, I agree with loudthud. It doesn't look like a real Sunn cabinet to me, either. Certainly not one I've ever seen.

As to its value, as always, it's worth what buyer and seller can agree on. My guess is that, in this case, it wouldn't be all that much, as it wouldn't have any collector value. Beyond that, it's a 2x15", which most players these days consider dinosaurs.

Well, the logo plate looks like an actual Sunn piece. Other than that, I'm with the other guys.

If the Sunn badge is authentic and the grill cloth is the pre-mid 69 type (unobtainium), it might be worth $100 with or without the speakers.

Grill cloth looks like the newer, Fender-style to me. But I've seen Sunn badges go for $25 all by themselves. Maybe twice that these days.

My mistake. They're going for $59 on ebay.
