FWIW - I replaced the original 6550's in my Sceptre with Tesla KT-88's. After fooling around with the bias a bit, they are set fairly high. The sould is very good.

I defer to the techs, but if your Solarus was the big amp, factory set for 6550's, they you should be able to run these tubes. For guitar, at least, they sound better (to me) than the Svetlana 6550's.

As always, YMMV.

what about valve art KT88's they are supposed to be exact copys of the GEC KT88
but u have my doubts. look guys i am on a limited bugget but i would be willing to trade some of my NOS tubes for a pair of gec kt88's
I have a rca 12ay7,5u4gb rca rectifier,tung-sol 5v4g,sylvania 5v3,a ez81 mullard. and more

Other than n.o.s. Tung-sol 6550s and GEC KT88s, there are a few other choices that will work well in vintage Sunns. The Ei KT 90s are supposed to be very good, and I heard that the new Chinese KT 88s are being well recieved by the audiophile market. Antique Electronics carries both of these.
I am a little unsure about any Chinese made tube at this point. The Svetlana 6550s are OK, but I had trouble with glowing plates on mine. Maybe these problems have been solved. I've also had noisy GEC KT 88s!
I still feel that the Tung-Sol 6550s are the best tube for Sunn heads!
