First Post...Bought My First SUNN Last Night!
« on: November 20, 2002, 09:48:08 pm »
Though I played through some SUNN amps in the early 70s, I never owned one until last night.

I went looking for an all tube combo and Sam Ash had a closeout on the T50C. At 399.00, this was a no brainer.

So, two questions....

1 I was impressed with it's sound, although the clean channel didn't seem to have the big bottom that other amps, like the Fender Vibro Verb, had. I wrote Ted Weber and he suggested his "Chicago" model to remedy this. Wondered what you guys thought about that...I use this only for recording.

I was also advised to switch out the tubes by someone who said "NOS RCA 6V6GTs, NOS RCA 12AT7s, and NOS RCA 7025s and don't bias the amp hot, have the bias at 18.5 to 20 mA. This is the sound you've heard are more recordings than I can count." Opinions?

2 Finally, I wondered if someone might tell me what happened to SUNN. Why did Fender drop them? Are they totally gone now...no hope of return?

Thanks!

Might be mistaken, but doesn't the T50C take 5881 or 6L6GC type tubes?

As for Sunn, she has set again...probably for the last time

Welcome to the World of SUNN, Ocean.

The T50C can get some nice "clean bottom" when coupled with its extension cab. It won't be a "Twin"......but better than it is now. IMHO, the T50C is the best guitar amp that's been around in years, perhaps, EVER!

It also tends to run pretty hot. A couple of guys that I really respect keep fans on them all the time.

IMHO, while FMIC probably won't do anything with SUNN again, perhaps somewhere down the road someone else might buy the name and take  on the challenge. SUNN deserves better. We can only hope.

Bass-ically Yours,
RB

Thanks Rich...yes, after using it a few weeks, I'd say that's the only weak point of the amp, no bottom. I spoke with Ted Weber and he suggested his "Chicago" speaker, or for all out BIG and clean, his California. What I'm afraid of, is getting rid of the Celestion may take away one of the main strengths of this amp, and that's the fact that it's a great hybrid between the British sound (probably because of the Celestion) and the all American Fender sound. So I don't know.

An extension cab isn't an option because I don't have the room in my small studio....

But it's a great amp!
