sunn amp brain teaser? maybe !
« on: April 29, 2003, 05:56:06 pm »
hi sunn nuts..i've been a proud sunn bass amp owner since 1968..i've have four 200s...one sorado..two 2000s..and concert and beta all with the cabs..hey! do i have too many??i use to have a 1973 model t which i stupidly sold and looking to trade one of my 2000s for but that's another post..the question that i seek an answer to is all of us guys that have vintage sunn amps, example, a 200s head,..has two speaker jacks in the back..one is for an 8 ohm cab and a 4 ohm switching jack..being in my early 50's and having lots to ponder it came to me recently  this question.if i didn't have an 8 ohm cab to run as my principle cab..and all i had was a 4 ohm cab..example..2x15 .8 ohm speakers wired in parallel.could i run this as a principle cab in the 4 ohm jack ??  would i be taxing the amp ?? would the amp run hot ?? would the amp not put out all i was designed for ?? does both jacks have to be used with the proper ohm cabs plugged in for both jacks to run the head at it's best ??does this question sound like my head is full of mush ? should i go fishing ? watch oprah ? if any of you sunn amp techs have an answer or a thought, make an old an proud sunn amp owner with not much to do happy and leave a post..hurry,  i go to bed early....BOB     WILMINGTON MASS

I too have a 200s and use it with a 4 ohm 2x15 cab.  I plug into the 4 ohm input on the 200s.  I was told this is the proper use - matching my ohms cab to amp.  If one has two 8 ohm cabs (like two seperate 8 ohm 1x15 cabs), you would use both input jacks on the head - one to each cab.  Running two 8 ohm cabs would be a 4 ohm load.  Again this is only my understanding.  Others plese correct me if I am off-base.

I have an OLDER  1200s (4x6550 model) pretty much the same as a 2000S and the 4 ohm jack on the back automatically switches to the 4 ohm tap on your Output tranny when you put plug in a speaker

so 2-8 ohm cabs  go into the 2 jacks and you get the 4 ohm tap

1 - 8-ohm cab   goes into the 8 ohm jack and you get the 8 ohm tap

1 - 4-ohm cab goes into the 4 ohm jack and you get 4 ohms

these 3 combos means your expensive power tubes tubes will be happy

What is interesting is that there is also an UNUSED 16 ohm tap on the OT soldered to nothing on the chassis so you could  also rewire the jacks of you need to load it with 16 ohms

have fun, but if you don't know how find and  drain  the filter caps I'd stay out of the inside of your chassis
I enjoy old Sunn stuff, tube and solid state, I have a Concert Bass, Concert slave, 1200s (4X6550, dual rectifier) Concert PA, Studio PA, and an old Acoustic 360 2X15 cab but with Sunn Speakers)

Rock On!!

a big thanks to ,  hops and bcomes..for your feed back..years ago a kind of understood what hops was saying about the cab set up balancing the cab/ohm load..but it's been a long time...i have run all three 200s amps all at once when i was ayounger lad with my band , playing an outside gig. if you wanted to hear loud with alot of BOOM , that was the set up.. i never ran two cabs off of a single head..i just couldn't remember the cab/ohm set up but now that i think back, two 8 ohm cabs will tap down to 4 ohms..and as bcomes mentioned, i do realize that my amps have the unused 16 ohm tap..if i had a cab that was truly a 16 ohm cab i know that the transformer has that option..when you guys get alittle older..you'll start asking questions that you already know the answers to but forgot..it's just a matter of time...it's coming....and you will get to bed earlier...i want to thank the both of you for leading me out of the valley of ignorance...talk to guys again, i'll probably be asking for you to find my keys..                  BOB            WILMINGTON, MASS
