Opinions on Solarus heads
« on: January 18, 2004, 02:30:28 am »
I just picked up a Sunn Solarus head and 2-12" cab, in mint condition.  I'm wondering what your opinions are on these heads.  I think they sound good, but looking at some of the posts on here, it seems that they have a lot of things that go wrong with them.  Any other reccomendations?  I play blues and heavy rock, and I need an amp with a really good clean tone.  Thanks all....

Any amp that old is going to need service and parts replacement from time to time. That one will get a good clean tone, but much past midnight on the volume it will start to get dirty. For miles of clean headroom, try a Model T. Of course, if you're using this for the quieter parts of songs. . .
Have you had it tech checked yet? What tubes are you using?

Yeah, I've had it checked out by a tech, and the only thing that was wrong with it was a bad reverb filter, so I changed the caps in there.  I'm running a pair of 6550's, because I'm looking for an amp with more headroom before it breaks up.  Just not too familiar with how reliable these amps are for road use.  I've used Fenders for years, and this thing blows them all out of the water.  If everything checks out, I'm looking to pick up a couple more heads to finish my rig off.
