300W enough?
« on: December 25, 2003, 07:49:29 am »
Hi!
I have a Sunn 300T (300W-tube..you know) and I want to buy a Ampeg 8*10 cabinet. Does a 300W -the old version- cabinet last for it? I don't know, but I think it's directly made for the SVT Classic which is loud as the Sunn. What do you think?

I too have a 300T and use and old Sunn 2 x 15" cabinet that has 2 JBL K-140's in it.  I am not absolutely sure about my cab's power handling capacity, but I am told these speakers can hanlde 150 watts each no problem- 300 watts using the pair.  I have never had a problem and it has always sounded kick-ass.

I have heard that in order to get the best tone from amp/cab set-up, the amp should be matched with a speaker cab that is at or a little more than the amp's power capacity.  Mabey this is why my set-up sounds so nice.  I do watch out that I don't max my 300T out though.  Usually set at 3-4 on the volume - and the same or a bit lower on the master volume.  Don't want to blow the speakers since they are approx. 30 years old you know.  Your 8x10" ampeg cab at 300 watts should be fine so long as you don't push the amp too hot.

Thanks for the answer. But I'm not sure enough about it. My bass sound really uses the capacity of a box. I have the big Marshall 4*12 which can handle 800W RMS. And that's a lot. But I thinks my cab really has to work to handle the power of the 300T. And usually I set 3-4 at the volume, too. Maybe there's a difference between 4*12 and 8*10. The 8*10 should be louder I think. I don't want to replace the speakers after a few weeks.

That's what a compressor or bass limiter pedal is for. I know they can
color your sound, but it's better than replacing or reconing speakers.
Tube amps are espically prone to blow speakers because they're more
attack sensitive than transistor amps.  Hope I helped you.

In this case-isn't it better to have a cab with a higher capacity than to color the bass sound through a compressor? I like dynamics in my sound and so I use the comp only a little bit. I also have the choice to wait till I find a 800W or 600W Ampeg 8*10..
But doesn't it sound better if the cab has approximate the same watt? Or is it a rumor? Maybe it sounds more vintage if the cabs are nearly full used in their capacity..

Your welcome.(On behalf of the "Sunn Community", that is )  I was origionally thinking in terms of making do with what you have. That's what I had to do for a year or so with a Hartke 2x10 and a really old 15" Sonic cab.  It sounded pretty good. Or so I remember from 1995.
