Coliseum Lead Volume Pot
« on: February 03, 2006, 10:56:18 am »
I just entered the wonderful world of Sunn with the purchase of a Coliseum Lead head.  So far I have tried it through my hartke cabinet and through the speakers in my Musicman 410/150.  This thing is huge and loud.  One thing (that the seller informed me of) that is "wrong" with the amp is that the threading on the main volume pot is gone, so the knob "floats".  I feel confident that I could replace the pot, but I could not find any markings indicating its value; anybody here know the value of the volume pot on the Coliseum Lead?
And while on topic of the Coliseum Lead, a couple more general questions:
The Distortion seems to make the amp quieter, except when coupled with the sustain, is that normal?
How are the footswitches wired?  there are 2 rca jacks for each distortion and  reverb, not sure why...
thanks!

Unfortunately we still do not have on this site a schematic of the coliseum lead (HEY DON T!!!)... and I have never seen one.  All of your questions would be easy to answer if we had one to look at...

If you are fairly confident that the existing volume pot is original, then by all means remove it and measure the resistance between the outside lugs.  Then pick the next higher "standard" control value. e.g. if you measure 42K, then go to a 50K control.  Most pot values are +/- 20% of their value, meaning it's not really that critical.

Fairly sure it is the original, I opened it up and all the pots looked to be of the same make.  I thought about simply taking it out and measuring it, but just thinking of the downtime while I wait for the part... not that big a deal, really.  Also considering some sort of adhesive, as the pot works fine--not a huge concern overall, but when I took the amp apart the ground lead to the pot broke off (due to the pot being able to move freely), and though it is easy to solder back on, I would hate for that to happen on the way from the car to the stage, for example.
So I guess eventually I'll either take it to a shop or measure and replace the thing myself.
Am I to understand that the footswitch wiring is a mystery too?  I tried my musicman switch and it did nothing.
it is unfortunate there is no schematic, it wold be so much easier...
thanks.
