Has anybody tested diferent KT-88's (not 6550's) to find their  "sound" (ie 200-s for bass) and if so wht where the resunlts of the differnt brands?? I am looking at E-H , JJ,  and possibly GrooveTubes but really can's spend the money to  test all of them.

I'm using Svetlana's now & they sound great, but the guy that does JJ's is a Sunn kind of guy so I'd imagine his would sound best. That's the direction I'm going in next.

I've used JJ KT88's in two different Sunn 200S's, and they have a fabulous sound. I'm using them for bass. I've tried Svetlana 6550C's, and GE 6550A's in both and in a 2000S, and the JJ are better than both by a long shot. I've also heard EI KT90's in a Sunn Spectrum set up for bass, and they sounded good, but the JJ sound better. Go with the JJ...you won't be disappointed.

I've got JJ's in every socket except the 6an8a driver tube on my olde 200s. Sounds worlds better than the other 200s with the 6550's. Very impressed with the sound. Don't know how many hours I'll get out of them. I push them hard and long... no sign of giving up after 12 months of hard use.

in the past i've used sovtek  (gross in any form), svetlana in a 5150 (ehh they sounded pretty alright, but you can't polish a turd), I have JJ's in my  jcm 800 right now (sound great but I had to work on a good preamp combo, I used an eh in v1 and jjs in v2 and 3. Call them up, he's a great guy and helped me out a ton, plus as it was said before he's a sunn guy). In my Sunn I have Groove Tubes (they're 6550's and sound alright, I think I'm going to get kt88's for it soon though). From my understanding EH is making a decent product nowadays.

1) Mullard or any nos
2) JJ
3) EH

after that I probably wouldn't stray too far off the path.

Just installed new JJ KT88's, ECC83s', and balanced pi ECC83s in my '74 model T.  Sound is excellent, with an open clear top end and a tight, LOUD bottom.  Immense improvement and a great sounding bass amp now...wife's cat ran and hid under the bed when I tried it out (sorry kitty!)
