my curiosity into vintage sunn good-ness has come to a head, i must give in.

im looking to set up a rig powered by a power amp, but by using a sunn piece as the preamp.

what would be ideal?

hit me up.

Unfortunately, the answer is, "Whatever you think sounds best."

I'm partial to the sound of the Sceptre/Sentura/Solarus amps, but they'd require modifications to operate as a preamp.

since i've never actually used various types of sunn gear, im not sure what would sound best.

what is the difference (if even explainable) between the tones of sunn types?

Sorry, I've never been any good at describing sounds. All I can really say is that, after I sold my first Sceptre back in 1982, every amp I used fell short until I bought my Sentura II a few years ago. They are the same amp, but came with different speaker cabinets.

I definately dig the tone of my '68 Sorado with original tubes :)

Sorado and 200S are basically the exact same amps.  65 tube watts and you can toss it onto a poweramp by hooking a cable from the output to the preamp in and have no troubles.

There are several amps under the name of "colliseum".  What did you have in mind?

with an internet handle like "weedian nazareth" I'd guess you want some dark sounds, eh? beta bass preamp comes to mind. what power amp and cabinet(s) do you use? I'm almost satisfied with the likes of my two 200s heads and Ampeg b5r head all into 2x15's each. Maybe try the Soldano stuff for pre's, too. good luck metal warlord.

Every Sunn solid state amp I've ever seen has a preamp out, and would work fine used as a preamp. The old Coliseum PA heads would not.
