Help with 1x15 cab
« on: August 13, 2005, 10:57:19 pm »
I recently purchased a 1x15 sunn cab at a thrift store for $20.00 everything seems to be working although it is pretty dirty. i was wondering if anyone could help identify it. Its about 11 inches deep 24 inches across and maybe 28-30+ inches tall the speaker has a square back and a silver cone and it has a Silver fender esque grill cloth. access to the speaker is through the back via taking off several screws and there is one jack.I'm not sure of the impedence or anything like that. also from searching the net it seems to look like the cab that came with the spectrum 1. ill post pics when i can.

From your description, you may have one of the very early sunn cabs... they had the rear mounted eminence speaker with the big square 40 oz magnet... the grille cloth, if it is one of those, is probably the silver grille cloth that was used by sunn in the 60's and not a fender cloth...  You were lucky to find this cabinet... I may have some old catalogs around and if so, I will sent a picture of the old 115 cabinet to you....

Are you sure its not a studio PA cab? Is the handle located on the short side (top) of the cabinet?

115 vs studio pa cabinet

The studio pa cabinet had a horn and  frequency divider switch on the rear of the cabinet... As near as I remember, they also came with JBL D-130 speakers.. not the square 40 oz Eminence....

The studio pa cabinets were a great thing... We furnished them to the Moody Blues when they came to our town for a show and one set was all they used for their vocals... they were amazed and had us contact Sunn for them... I noted that at the Red Rocks Concert, the bass amp used looked like the old 2000s from 1968....

Your description suggests you have the cabinet from a split cabinet Sonaro. Versions before 69 were an all-in-one design but that year the model was changed to a conventional piggyback configuration. The cabinet does not have the faux front to make it look like 1-1/4 inch plywood was used. The 69 catalog lists the dimensions as 29" high (including castors), 24" wide, 11-1/2" deep. I'm not sure what the last year of production was.
