Another 300T question....
« on: February 18, 2006, 05:40:21 pm »
My 300T seems to severely lack clean headroom, i use a distorted tone anyway but something is obviously awry.

Even with all the knobs low (say 3-4) and the input pad engaged there is audible musical distortion in Channel 1.

Any easy things to check? Bad valves? Pre or power?

Any advice would be appreciated

m.

What kind of bass are you using? Active or passive? That's probably not the problem, but it could be affecting it.

Here's one possibility.

In most tube amps, Sunns for sure, the input goes first to an amplifier stage, then the volume control. Because of this, it's possible to overdrive the first stage with a hot input, yet keep the volume low overall. Try turning the volume down on the bass, or using a different, preferably passive, one. If doing this allows you to turn up higher, ang gets you a clean sound, then you might well be overdriving the input stage.
