Sorado Fuse Problem (Updated: JoeArthur, Edbass, Isaac, HELP)
« on: October 22, 2006, 07:18:06 pm »
I was playing my Sorado, got a phone call so I flipped it to standby and took the call. When I got back, the amp was off, but the power switch was still in the on posistion. I looked at the back and the fuse was sticking out further than normally. When that happens, does it mean the fuse is blown? I tried pushing it back into place, and it clicked and stayed, but when I turned on the amp back on it popped out again.

Up until this very moment the head has been working great, completely retubed about a month ago and has been sounding so good. You guys have any idea whats up with it?

Okay, I was going to replace the fuse just to see if that was the problem and when I tried to pop it out, the fuse just broke off inside the amp which is weird because I barely touched it.

Tommorow I am calling one of the repair shops here to have that looked at, I hope there is something that can be done about it. Any other suggestions?

It sounds like you just have a regular glass type fuse, and no these don't pop out when they blow.

It might be that the cap was loose.  With these you have to put the fuse in the cap part first and use the cap to guide the fuse in the holder. Push down and turn clockwise to lock it.

If you just pushed and the fuse wasn't really seated in the cap that could have broken it.

I'd take the cap off, unplug the amp from the wall, then turn the amp on its back to try to get the broken fuse to fall out.

If that is successful, then I'd put in a new fuse, plug the amp back in, and see if it powers up.

I tried my hardest to get that little piece out, but to no avail. I took into the shop on tuesday to have the fuse holder replaced, and to have a 3 pronged power chord put on. My old chord was quite scary looking, glad to be rid of it.

Welp, turns out the transformer was the problem. The guys at the shop told me it wasn't even a stock transformer, it was an ampeg that had been put in there at some point, but either way, it is blown. They have some used replacement transformers at the shop that he thinks will work, and they are going to get back to me with my options on Monday or Tuesday.

Bummed. This week without the amp has been hard enough.  :-(
