60s sunn cabinet
« on: September 08, 2006, 06:20:49 pm »
I just picked up a 60s sunn 2x15 cabinet to use with my 200s head I'm not sure what ohm setting my head should be on I have it switch to 8 ohms and it sounds great but is that what the cabinet takes?

I guess you could take it apart and see what ohm the speakers are and then figure out how they wired OR you could go to Radio Shack or some equivalent and pick up a $20 ohm/voltage meter and check it in 10 seconds.  I suggest you get the meter, it will come in handy.

Btw, I'm jealous of anyone that has one of those old 2x15's.

An ohm meter measures resistance, not impedance.

The resistance will be lower.

i knew mine wasn't exact, but if it reads 7.4 I can safely assume that my cab is 8 ohms right?

I just opened the back of the cabinet and found 2 15" sunn transducers the speakers were wired seperately they did not jump from one to the other so can someone tell what the ohms would be.

I'm going to assume that'd be parallel wiring which would make it 4 ohms if they are 8 ohm speakers or 8 ohms if the speakers are 16 ohms.

Two ways to wire two speakers together....

parallel:

     +.......W.I.R.E......+.........W.I.R.E... +
Spk1                       Spk2                   Jack
     -.......W.I.R.E......-..........W.I.R.E...-

For parallel, use the following formula....

Total Ohms =1/[(1/R1)+(1/R2)].   So if you have two 8 ohm speakers, it would be (1/8)+(1/8), which is 1/4, then take 1/(1/4), which is 4.  If you have 16 ohm speakers, using the same formula you get 8 ohms.

If it istn't parallel, its series (which I won't draw).  In series, you add the ohms of the speakers.  So if you have two 8 ohm speakers, then total is 16 ohms.  If you have two 16 ohm speakers, then total is 32 ohms (highly unlikely).  I wouldn't think a bass amp would be wired for 16 or 32 ohms, but I've definetly been wrong before.

Like all of the 60s Sunn amps, the output transformer of the 200S has taps for 4, 8 and 16 ohms. Mine is set up for 4 and 8, but I'm going to change it to 8 and 16 so that I can utilize my two 200S cabinets. All of my D140 drivers are 8 ohms, so two 16 ohm cabinets lets me use both.

my cab has 2x15s and has just been wired in parellel making it 4 ohms my head has an ohm switch for 4,8, and 16 ohms. My 2nd cab is on the way with 2x15s in it too .what  ohms should this cab be wired fo Is it supposed to be same as the 1st cab which is 4 ohms?

There's really no way for me, or anyone, to know what your 2nd cabinet is. If you don't know, you'll have to find out when it arrives. If you want to use two cabinets, it would be best if they are the same impedance. Since you have only 4,8, and 16 capability, they'd best be either 8 (not possible with your first cabinet) or 16. Yes, you could wire the cabinets in series, but I don't recommend it. Wire the drivers in series for 16 ohms, then run the cabinets in parallel.
