200s outputs
« on: July 07, 2007, 01:42:25 pm »
on the 200s and various other models, there are two output jacks, one 4ohm and one 8ohm.  with two cabinets, one in each output, do they default to 4ohm?  I seem to recall a thread about this at one point.

I want to know what to plug into these if I'm running two cabs.  I may rewire a cabinet to achive what the amp wants.  I have a 4ohm 410 and would like to add a single fifteen under that.  any suggestions?

Yes, you can.

The way the old Sunn speaker jacks are wired, the 16 ohm jack is connected to the 16 ohm tap of the transformer. The 8 ohm jack is connected to the 8 ohm tap, and is a switched jack. When you plug into the 8 ohm jack, the 16 ohm jack is disconnected from the 16 ohm tap and connected in parallel with the 8 ohm jack, so both jacks are then connected, in parallel, to the 8 ohm tap.

In short, there's not a thing wrong with plugging directly into the 8 ohm Extension Speaker jack.

There that's the thread.  does this work in the 200s as well, defaulting to the 4ohm tap?

That will take some creativity. Your amp is wired to take one or two 8 ohm cabinets, or a single 4 ohm cabinet into the extension jack. You would need to find a 4 ohm 1X15 cab and run them in series to the 8 ohm jack. Or rewire your 410 for 16 ohms, your amps outputs to the 8 and 16 ohm taps, find a 16 ohm 15 and plug them in as intended. Or get a pair of 8 ohm cabinets and just plug 'n play.

thanks that's what I wanted to know.  likely what I will do is rewire my 410 to 8ohms and try to find a 8ohm 15 cab.

You will need to be more creative than that. If your 410 is at 4 ohms, it undoubtedly has 16 ohm or 4 ohm drivers there is no reasonable way to get it to 8 ohms. Find a 4 ohm 115 and daisy chain them in series to the 8 ohm tap.

while we are on the subject-
i have a few sunn amps w/ an 8 ohm and a 4 ohm speaker output jack.
can i use the 4 ohm W/OUT using the 8 ohm?
thanks if ya know

Yes. If you use either of the outputs by themselves they connect to the respective taps. If you use both of them they will default to the lower impedance tap.

thank you.
i have old Fenders and they say to always use the main output-to never use the 'extension cab' output alone-so i was just wonderin about the sunns.

I have a question regarding this OHM buisness:

Recently picked up a concert bass head that's rated at 200 watts and 2 OHMs.

I plan on building two 8 OHM cabs to run my amp at 4 SAFE OHMs.

The cabs I want to build are 1 4x12 and 1 2x15 (or instead of the 2x15 one 1x18)

Anyone know if the concert bass could handle this combo? Would each individual cab need to be close to 200 watts? Or 100 watts to equal to 200 watts? Or could the cabs be built with around 500 watts? Please fill me in on this!

The amp doesn't care anything about the power rating of your speakers.

The concert will deliver 150 watts RMS into a 4 ohm load.

If you are using two 8 ohm cabs you can assume the output will be divided evenly between them. So the minimum rating for the cabs should be around 75 watts each.

You can always power cabs with higher wattage ratings, but you won't get any more power out of the amp - your speakers will just operate safer with the power you do have.

that's even easier, good idea

You can also get inside the amp and change the taps around so you've got a 4 ohm tap outside. Just make sure not to mess with the tap that is hooked up to the feedback resistor and the sound won't change.....I believe the feedback is probably hooked up to the 16 ohm tap. I did this on my 200S to make it a little more useable, but I also put the 8 ohm tap out to the back too and got rid of the stepped jack setup.

Yes, feedback comes from the 16 ohm tap.

What I don't get is that the connections to the 16 ohm tap are different, depending on whether or not it's used as an output. More study is in order, I suppose.

The fenders are wired differently. They don't have multiple secondary taps on the output transformer to select impedances. Both output jacks are in parallel.

The 1960s amps changed the main output jack when fender went to piggy-back styles. It became a shorting jack, so that when nothing is plugged into it, the secondary winding on the output transformer would be shorted together instead of remaining open. This protects the output transformer longer if someone forgot to plug in their speaker cabinet.

So if you just plug into the extension jack, your main output jack still has the secondary shorted.

I don't see the feedback connections changing - is this what you meant?
