Something on E-Bay smells Funny

Does anybody else smell something funny about this?  I don't know much about Sunn compared to the rest of you, although I play through a Solarus, a "Red Knob" Concert Bass Amp and a 2000S Bass Anp.

A Concert Bass Amp with Reverb Jack?  Look at how the speaker's wired ?
Am I right?  Is there just something out of whack here?

I was interested in the cab, but I'm afraid.  I bought my Concert Bass and the 2000S off E-Bay  and they are both great, terrific transactions.  I'm very satisfied.  What do the rest of you guys think?

I don't see any problems. The Concert Bass was built on the same chassis as the Concert Lead, so it had a cutout for the Reverb and boost jacks. In the case of the Concert Bass, they put a small plate over it instead of installing the jacks, exactly as in this unit. However, mine had both speaker jacks. No idea why this one has one covered over. I'm not suer what you mena by "how the speaker's wired". Looks like a heavy gauge speaker cable to me.

Nothing to worry. I've got a Concert Bass like that one. However it does look like they placed the RCA jacks in the Reverb/Vibrato cut-out instead of the Distortion/Boost cut-out. Probably an assembly line goof they just let go, inspector was out that day.

The 2-button remote footswitch controls the Distortion (On/Off; knob on front controls amount) and Boost (actually a cut/pad, the illusion of Boost when button is depressed the amp toggles from a med to loud volume). When footswitch plugs are disconnected the Distortion feature is rendered inactive and the Boost is at loud. I guess what you do is preset the medium volume as your normal playing volume and then switch to Boost to kick out the jams!

The cable issue, as stated above, does just appear to be just a large guage cable. Understandably, the poor resolution photo would make someone question this.

Can't thank you guys enough for the education.  I learn so much about my Sunn equipment monitering this web site.  Never knew about the Concert Lead / Concert Bass chasis thing.  So glad you guys are here and especially this website!

I decided to pass on this auction anyway, because I am really mainly interested in cabs.  I want to put together a pair of 2 X 15 Sunn Cabs to play my Concert Bass Amp & 2000S through.  Boy, they sure don't appear for sale very often, working, not working,  empty or otherwise.

One last question.  What might I expect to pay for some of the 2 x 15 cabs?
I mean, how much have you seen them going for?  I know of course that it depends on model, condition, original speakers...etc., but just roughly speaking?

Thats a tough one. Mint JBL D140-f's however can go for like $250.00 each (the average high). Empty cab's should be around $100 (seldom see them mint). Figure that in the guesstimating! Sellers may not know what kind of speakers are in there, so you could get lucky and get 2 JBL's and near mint cab for $200.00!

As inexpensive as $ 100 - $ 200 ?  Really?  I'm surprised.  I would have suspected they'd be much more.

I'm ready with the JBL D140 F speakers.  I recently purchased a pair of them so I would have them if I come across a cab.  I got the pair for $ 350  probably because they've been reconed with a non-JBL recone kit.  But I understand that the recone kits are still available from JBL if I want to have them reconed.  Is that true?  Or did I make a mistake?

The generic recone kits are cheaper than the JBL recone kits but I'm not sure what the differences are (aluminum/copper voice coils, surround edge, efficiency, etc), best to ask your recone guy. Since they are just reconed I wouldn't bother having them restored to original unless they fail on you.

But I have read that the true JBL D140 recone kits are really kits for the E140/K140 speakers, which may or may not be better depending on the circumstances. As a bass player I would think it better since the E140/K140 speakers were rated for a higher RMS power.

Around here (Baltimore), Sunn was a big seller and there are quite a few Sunn 2x15 cabs, but most were sold with the Eminence 60WRMS speakers. Same holds true for Kustom. Not many parents opted for the extra $200-300 for JBL or Altec when buying junior his first big amp! Most have seen a lot of gigging and are rather rough. Speakers have been replaced when all sorts of stuff over the years (Pyle, or anything that fit really!), but seldom have people upgraded or replaced the high end speakers. They've usually just retired the cabinet or traded them in for new stuff.

I got a 200S cabinet for $100 (plus shipping), because the seller mistakenly listed it as a 2x12 cabinet. The JBL D140s I'm going to put into it I got for $100 (both, not each!) because the seller thought one was blown and was just throwing it in.

Sometimes you get lucky.

wow!  I'll say you got lucky.  I grew up just outside Baltimore (Rosedale-Overlea area) and still have family there.  If you ever come across 2 X 15 cabs that seem like a decent deal, e-mail me. (pickinatit@comcast.net)

I figured if I ever get something to put my D140F's in, I would see what they sound like as they are with the generic recone.  I've been tempted to pick up a couple of other 2 X 16  cabs I've seen for sale, but I want to hold out for the Sunn.      Thanks for the advice and info.

Yeah, I caught that later on.  But I didn't really miss anything because  I wasn't buying anyway.  I already have a Concert Bass Amp.
