Biasing, re-tubing.
« on: January 08, 2007, 10:44:07 pm »
I recently bought a Sunn Solarus from Ebay that seems as though it needs some new tubes. The problem is this is my first tube amp and I'm not sure what tubes would compliment this head well. It's the earlier all tube version of the head with 2 6550's and a 5u4g rectifier. Also I know that the amp will need to be rebiased and I was wondering if anyone knew what the readings should be for this amp to sound the best.

I just ordered a pair of Tung Sol 6550's for my Solarus.  I think they're a pretty safe bet on how to get a great tone out of your Solarus(aside from it being a well-crafted Sunn, of course!).  I'm going to also recommend seeing a tech about biasing.  The money spent is worth it when you have a tone that makes you play for hours non-stop. :)
