re-issue vs. vintage cabs
« on: May 05, 2007, 08:38:47 am »
Time to weigh-in on vintage vs. reissue sunn.....
I'm wondering mostly about the 4x12 cabs.....looking to buy a sunn 4x12 (for guitar) but can only find reissues. Is it still a solid cab or did fender ruin the cabs too?
Any input is much appreciated! I don't wanna get hosed!
Thanks-

I haven't seen a Model 412, but my Model 215 seems to be a solidly built cabinet.

afaik-cabs dont hold up on the vintage vibe as much as amps simply cause its tolex, wood and cloth and spkrs all of which can be switched out as needed. i have vintage Sunn cabs and the later ones and its all good.

Personally, I don't think the Fender Sunn cabs are so hot. People seem to be really into them, but I have cabs that are pretty rigged and they blew that Fender Sunn cab away. I have an old Peavey 4x12 that I gutted and put two V30s and two Greenbacks in. The Fender Sunn cab sounded like a child crying in the distance compared to that thing.

I have never played through a vintage Sunn 4x12, so I don't really have much to say as far as that comparison is concerned.

I have pre and post Fender cabs. I agree with Stanner and Isaac, the cabs of both eras are solidly built and have withstood many nights out on the town.
