power tube preferences
« on: January 08, 2008, 12:26:30 pm »
I'm looking to replace the mismatched 6550s in a Sorado I just picked up and am looking for recommendations. Will probably have to go new (vs. NOS) and am deciding between Winged Cs, Reissue Tung-Sols, and Electro-Harmonix. I've read decent reviews for all three. Any recommendations would be appreciated! Thanks!

I have been using the  new reissue GENALEX - GOLD LION KT-88's  with nice results in my Sorado. You may also be able to find a nice pair of used Tung Sols 6550s for a decent price online. Those sound very nice as well! Would also be courious as to how the new reissue Tung Sols sound vs. the original if anyone here has had experience with both.

Another great choice are the JJ KT88's. I've been using these in my 200S for years and they sound fantastic.

I would not recommend the EH's. I have them and they are OK, but a new EH 12AX7 went bad in less than a year. The new JJ sounds better I think.
