Coliseum 880 sounding thin...PLEASE HELP!

ive had the coliseum 880 for about 3 years and i absolutely love the head. ive always run it into an ampeg 8x10 and it sounds huge, but within the last 3 months i plugged it into my sunn 6x10 and it sounded really fuzzy and thin. and i get a ton of crackling when the knobs are turned. so tonight I brought it to practice tonight and ran it through an 8x10 thinking that time would fix the amp, but to no avail, same problems.

what do you think this could be, and does anyone know a reliable sunn tech in the san francisco bay area?

He's worked on a couple Sunn Betas for me, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I'd recommend him in a second, although admittedly he's a bit busy and a bit pricey, but oh man is it worth it for gear you care about.

Okay, dante, let's go back. The Coliseum sounded huge through the Ampeg. Then it sounded thin and fuzzy through the Sunn 610. Have you put it back on the Ampeg? That, or another known good cabinet, will tell you if the problem is in the amp or the speaker.

Do you know that the 8x10 you ran it through at practice is good?

Assuming it is, then the issue is definitely not in the speaker. That leaves the amp, cords, and instrument.

Test each one with known good replacements. Many times amp issues have turned out to be bad cords.

Once you've proved that it's the amp (assuming it works out that way), then you'll need to find a tech. I'm in Oregon, so I can't help you there.

I'd clean the controls first.

Visually check the control lug to PCB connections at the same time.

+1 on Isaccs suggestion. Check each component with a known working unit. Step by step...or you'll end up going in circles.
