Sorado, 200S tubes
« on: January 06, 2009, 01:33:32 pm »
I just wanted to check with you all, before I make a big mistake, because you guys know more about this than I do.  I have a Sorado head and I know it is the same as a 200S, it has 6550 power tubes in it and the schematic shows 6550.  Can I safely put KT-88 tubes in place of the 6550 tubes without doing anything except rebiasing the amp.  What is the main difference between the two tubes.  I have heard that the KT-88 tubes are a little more agressive and put out a little more power.

Thanks,

Zulu

The KT88 was a European version of the 6550A with higher ratings and a bit different internal design difference, resulting in a tube that puts out slightly more power and sounds slightly different, and of course has higher ratings. Stick them in and rebias and you're good to go.

I use JJ KT88's in my 200S and like them a lot.
