Solarus Power Cord Change-Out
« on: January 07, 2009, 10:51:30 am »
Last night I dropped off my Sunn Solarus (two EL34, 40 watt version) to have the two prong power cord changed to a three prong power cord.

Is this a relatively simple R&R ?  Is there anything in particular that needs to be done (regarding the Polarity switch for instance, which if I understand correctly will be disabled by this R&R) or any particular warnings/advice the tech should be given ?

worried about my 40 yr. old baby,
Michael

Hi there,it's not your standby sw. that will be disabled,it's your "polarity" sw. that will be disabled, good luck,Mel.

This is an easy modification. The best discussion of this I've seen is in Dave Funk's Tube Amp Workbook. He recommends disabling the ground polarity switch and placing the fuse and power switch on the black (hot) side (black AC wire, then the fuse, then the power switch, to the power transformer primary, then the other leg of the power transformer primary to the neutral (white) side of the AC wire).  This is different than the original Sunn schematics that show the fuse on one side of the AC cord and the power switch on the other side. The AC ground prong (green wire) is grounded to the amp chassis, usually at or near the power transformer.

Good Luck!

Ryan

Hi there,I always go to the switch first,so you can shut off the AC when you change the fuse, otherwise you're putting a fuse into a "hot" line. It doesn't show it properly, but in the schematic one side of the neon bulb in the on/off sw. is connected to the sw. The end result is even if the fuse blows, the neon will stay lit,but you can change it safely.Good luck,Mel.
