Solarus Can Cap values variations
« on: June 15, 2009, 03:43:21 pm »
I have to Recap my 69 Solarus.... Currently has a 30 20 20 20can. An old 525 volt one. A Techie friend has a new 40 40 40 40 Can he says is 550 volts. Can I use this Cap Can? and what benefit's or disadvantages with those values? I intend to remove the ADDED rectifier diodes and use a rectifier tube as it was stock. Thank you for help.  :-D

You can use that can.

Be aware that changing back to a tube rectifier will make the amp slower and more squishy in feel. Going to a 40 instead of the 30 at the first stage will make the bass slightly tighter and quicker. Going to a 40 instead of a 20 on the 2nd stage will make the screen voltage more stable which will reduce hum and noise. Going to a 40uf in the last two stages will change the tone of the phase inverter section and preamp stages, giving them more bass. It could be too much and the amp may oscillate. The 500v could also possibly not be as high as what is actually in the amp.....don't know without actually testing the B= voltages.

Should you use that can??

In my opinion, if you want to go back to vintage (sounds like you do) then stick with the proper cap values. The tone will change with the other can you mentined. My opinions on the can caps are well known already here, but the only cans that are available are underrated for what the B+ in these amps are. Discrete caps are better for many reasons including cost.

Thank you a very concise answer and gentle advice. Might use the Can for first 2 stages.
