200s with solid state rectifier
« on: August 26, 2009, 09:48:54 am »
I have a 200s which doesn't have a socket for a tube rectifier. It looks like the factory shipped this with a solid state rectified PS. The front panel has the made in Tualatin Oregon vs Portland silkscreen. When did Sunn start shipping 200s chassis for only solid state rectification? I also assume that the 100s and 200s chassis were the same configuration except one tube was omitted for the 200s??

It is unclear when Sunn started shipping amps with solid state rectification. There was a transitional period where a cover was installed in place of the GZ34 socket. For the record, what's the date on your chassis? The 100S and 200S never used the same chassis as far as I know. The 100S has 4 inputs but the 200S only has 2. The inputs on the 200S are inline with the pots and there isn't enough room for all six holes. Different story on the 1000S/2000S which had 4 input jacks.

No date markings on the chassis - didn't check the date codes on the potentiometers. This chassis has a second hole next to the pre-amp tube that is covered. I just assumed that it was also used for the 100s - didn't notice the input jack config was different.

I don't have enough info to know for sure, but if you look at the Sunn schematics dated 10/70, they still have the 5AR4 rectifiers.  Then the '72 Catalog gives power ratings of 80W and 150W to the same amp circuits which were previously rated at 60W and 120W, respectively, indicating the implementation of SS rectification.  So the change probably occurred during or at the end of the 1971 production year, if you figure that the '72 catalog was edited in late '71/early '72.

Anybody have additional info on that?

Hi,

just the same. They changed to SS app 1970- Edbass told me once. So there must be 200S/2000/Sorados with the GZ34 Tube or SS  and 190B, 350B just with the SS on the market.

Greetings

I've got a 1970 200S with a factory tube rectifier still. I'd have to look inside the chassis again to be sure, but I believe it was 6/70.
