1983 Sunn Branded 12" SPKR - question
« on: September 05, 2009, 06:20:25 pm »
I was given a used 12" speaker - the label on the magnet says ~

SUNN LOUDSPEAKER
SUNN MUSICALL EQUIPMENT CO.
WILLIAMSTOWN, KY

MODEL 266
16 OHMS
50 Watts RMS
100 WATTS PROGRAM

This appears to be a musical instrument speaker.... Sunn didn't enter the Hi-Fi market as far as I know..

The odd thing is ... it has a foam surround like hi-fi speakers.

The cone code 82-0179 checks out positive as a cone that Sunn used in those days, so it's certain that this speaker wasn't reconed for hi-fi use at some time by a previous owner.

SO, what's the deal ? Anyone know ? Did Sunn put foam surrounded spkrs in their gear ?

Thanks and have some great days.

Not necessarily.  I've restored/rebuilt many cabs and speakers.  Often times, a good recone/rebuild shop will get the "kit" from the original manufacturer or from the stock pile that was purchased from them if they are now out of business.  On occasion, the cone will have the correct numbers since they are "new old stock."   I've recently upgraded a cab to Altec 421As.  I had to put speaker gasket/foam on the opposite side of the frame since this particular cab, the speakers are rear mounted.   8-)
