Distortion Pedal For Concert Lead
« on: October 23, 2009, 12:25:36 pm »
I have a Concert Lead, which I love, but from time to time, I want more distortion. I am not a pedal guy and dont know much about them. Any suggestions for a good sounding pedal? Thanks guy!

guitar
79 concert lead
with two sunn 412
gibson les paul

all different styles, but i wanted something for more distortion. I thought easiest solution would be a solid sounding pedal, I dont want to lose a nice sound and make it come off all cheesy, just a little more distortion than the Concert Lead provides.

I have a concert lead with the silver face and I use a russian Big muff or a proco rat. I ues either one to thickin the distortion some times both. I like playing thick slow stuff and that works for me. you can find proco rat for cheap on ebay.

I've got the same amp.  I find any pedal that I can adjust the level on will give more distortion on the 'leads distortion channel.  I usually throw a compressor in front and rail the level.  not my favorite distortion but it is gainier.  I have a couple pedals, a modified boss, various others, right now my favorite is one from brian wampler.  if you like the amps distortion and want more, increase your input level.  otherwise you are searching for the Holy Grail.

I have a silverface and it takes to pedals really well. Just a regular Tubescreamer or DS1, Rat, MXR will do it. Most of the TS pedals are more associated with tube amps, but it works for me. Crank the level and a little gain and you should be there.

If you can find one of the older Rat pedals, you're gold.  However, a reproduction from the 90's or later also sounds rad, and is much, much cheaper. I picked one up for $60 Canadian not too long ago.

You could also check out the Z-vex Super Hard On, which is loved by everyone who uses it for making their guitar sound way bigger.  There are really simple ways to make cheap clones, though, so maybe just learn to build a MOSFET boost pedal for a fraction of the price. :)
