Sunn Sonic 1 & Sonic 2 Tube Amps,,  Whats the difference between the 2  ?

20 watts. The Sonic l was rated at 40 watts using a pair of EL34's and the Sonic ll was rated at 60 watts using a pair of KT88's.

I don't think that is completely true....maybe the earlier ones might have been that way, but the 1970 Sonic 1 I have is clearly a 60 watt amp identical to a 200S. It has the Schumacher transformers in it and higher voltages than the Dynaco ones. I should ask Conrad if he remembers......

Is your Sonic maybe an l-40? That was a 60 watt amp, but was the head itself was actually marked as an "l-40" or just as a "Sonic l", since the "40" part of "Sonic l-40" was probably simply a reference to the upgraded D140F loaded cabinet?
Who knows? Obviously Mr. Sundholm would be the one to ask, it seems anomalies abound back in the Sunn heyday.
I've got a clearly marked 2000S with an also clearly marked inspection date of 4/72, and according to everything I've seen or have (including a 1972 catalog), the 2000S was renamed "350B" by 1972.

You know I asked myself all those questions when I got it, and it is in fact a 1970 Sonic 1. The control plate was mostly sunbleached, so I relabeled it as a 200S. I like the earlier Dynaco transformer 200S's better though....they sound sweeter and are not quite as loud. I used to have a 200S head and cab in mint shape from 1967 but sold it to get my vintage SVT head. I thought about getting another older 200S, but if I just get my 1968 2000S up and going, and get a cabinet together, then I'll have a better sound anyway. One of these days......

Is your '70 Sonic l SS rectified?

Hi Ed,

It was tube rectified from the factory. I put a Weber Copper Cap in because of the higher filtering in the power supply that I added. It is a good match......
