Entwistle - Where to start in the Who catalog?
« on: June 11, 2010, 05:36:30 pm »
I came to Sunn amps and this forum through my love of doom, sludge, and the like, but I just revisited the Youtube clips of "dc10bass" (the next best thing to the Ox himself), and I finally decided that I needed to get serious about The Who.

As for my familiarity with The Who, I've really only heard the radio "hits"--and I'd honestly be Ok with never hearing most of them again--but I'd love to delve into Entwistle's bass work and maybe some of The Who's lesser known gems (i.e. - anything that isn't used as intro music to CSI.) Where to begin is the question.

Suggestions would be much appreciated. Cheers, folks!

"Live at Leeds"
It's Hiwatt gear, not Sunn; but his tone and playing are absolutely stupendous. The real deal; raw and live, no studio shenanigans, multiple takes, etc.
IMO probably the best Entwistle "primer" for the uninitiated.

The Who Live at the Fillmore East, 1968, is an EXCELLENT show. The entire bootleg is on Youtube from hvh823iow. Pretty good sound quality. Best of all, to the best of my knowledge, both Entwistle and Townsend are playing through Sunn equipment. I believe Entwistle is playing Frankenstein through a 100s into two or four Sunn 2x15s. It probably my favorite who show.

Here's My Generation and My Way from that show:

+1, The Who weren't very famous for their records in the beginnig but for their gigs. This is a MUST HAVE record / CD for every rock fan.

Ditto on "Live at Leeds." Be sure to get the newer version with a few extra tracks.

And the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival box set with the complete Who set is amazing, too.
Sunn since June 1971!
1971 Sorado, 2000S, Coliseum Bass, Coliseum Lead
1970 200S; 1974 Coliseum 880
