Hello,
SPL 18's were 8ohm cast aluminum basket 3" aluminum voice coil speakers capable of handling 400 watts RMS and we frequently tested them by plugging them into the wall @120vac at 60hz and they had to live overnight. I don't recomend trying it but thats how we tested them at the factory. I have a pair of SPL 15R's in each my PA cabinets that I bridge a Sunn SPL6800 amp into. Thats 1200 watts into the 4ohm load and they have been used with out failure since 1984. Recone parts used to be available from Waldom but only in large quantities but that was a few years ago. They were also used in a poor sounding bass guitar cabinet where the loading was insuficient to prevent the coil from bottoming out against the back plate. I believe Alpha Metals back in Chicago made the baskets and probably still possess the molds for the SPL12 & 15. The 18" broke and we didn't replace it. That about raps it up.
