Initial contact with tech on 200S
« on: December 10, 2010, 06:58:38 pm »
Interesting comments on the 200S when i dropped it off.  First thing he said was get rid of the K88s and put in some 6550s.  He's also thinking it could be possible to tap the transformer for 4 - 8 and 16 ohms by adding an additional plug-in.  Any thoughts on that idea?  Personally, I haven't seen a 16 ohm cab in forever.

KT88's are a superior tube to the 6550, with higher ratings and higher power output, and equal or better sound, but either one will work. For myself, and a lot of others here, the JJ KT88 is the best power tube for a 200S. Reliable, sounds good, good pwoer...what more do you want.....

There are a 4ohm, 8ohm, and 16 ohm tap in the amp already. The 16 ohm one is hooked to the negative feedback loop internally inside the amp head. You can change the wires on the back as far as which one goes to the jacks, and you can also change the extension speaker jack to a regular jack and run a tap to it since most cab jumpering is done these days at the cabinet instead of the amp. So you can have 4 and 8, 4 and 16, or 8 and 16 on the back of your amp by just changing a wire routing or two internally.

Any operation a tech suggests should include an explanation of how it will benefit you as a bassist or guitarist. I had a tech suggest a Master Volume once simply because the last 8 people that brought that same amp model in for work were guitarists.

Sounds to me like your tech knows nothing of Sunn amps, wants your KT88s and wants to charge you a lot for stuff you don't need done to your amp. And 16 ohm amps/cabs quite common in mid range high gain amps.

It's hard to believe these are only 80w head now! actually 72w measured.
