question regarding mods for 1000s (350L) really
« on: December 23, 2010, 08:51:57 am »
I have what I expect is a 100s but it is labeled 350L  I play bass thru this amp and was wondering if there are any mods taht would make it more bass friendly- it has a mid boost and I'm wondering if a really good amp tech could easily make this or any other mods...thanks

What do you want from it that you're not getting? I've played bass through a Sceptre and a Sentura II, which I think are the same circuit as the 100S, and always liked the bass sound I got from them.

I'm sorry It's really a 1000S  with a label saying 350L.

It has a mid boost and I really would like to modify this to be a bass boost.

and any other mods that may help.

thanks

All the 190L/350L amps I've ever seen had a sticker covering an old model name on the front panel. However, there is a subtle difference in the circuitry having to do with the order in which the tremolo and reverb are positioned in the circuit. There is also a difference in the tremolo/reverb PCBs. Checkout the following threads.

The amps (350L, 350B, SS rectified 2000S) are very similar. Take it to a competent tech along with the schematic for a 2000S. Tell them that you want the mid switch on your 350L to do what the bass boost does on the 2000S schematic. That should be a piece of cake for a good tech, in fact they should be able to by pass the "frills" and completely remake a 350L into a 350B pretty easily.
I will also add that a 350L should be a pretty killer bass amp without any mods at all.
The bass boost on a 2000S can be a little strong. I suppose it has a lot to do with what cab(s) you are using, but with a JBL loaded 2000S cab(s) it can be sort of "over the top" bass wise.
IMO the bass boost sounds pretty killer at low SPL levels, but personally I like my Sunn's "cookin'"; I enjoy flapping my pant legs and tingling my hangy downs as much as the next player, at volume a 2000S rig moves plenty of air without bass boost engaged, and in my experience using the bass boost can really suck headroom and make things get a bit "inarticulate" and pretty hairy.
Tonally sloppier than I like to play anyway, as always your results may vary.

If you plan to sell it, I suggest not making the modifications.

Hi,

in case U keep it (...), I would sugest the following mod:

You can attach another 20yF con. of the big cap can (parallel) in the high voltage supply for the power tubes. I did this simple modification on my 350B, it's dead quiet now.

Greetings

I couldn't help nut peel the ugly, faded 350L sticker off the amp.
Since I am going to keep it.  I discovered a very new, shinu 1200 sticker underneath. (for those of you that were wondering but didn't want to remove your sticker). amp looks much better andcleaner now with new knobs and feet and screws that go into the bottom of the chassis.  this forum is great. what a ton of advice I have gotten! I feel like I know something now.
