i wanna make my sceptre the ult clean amp....
« on: November 27, 2010, 05:55:48 pm »
So, let's talk. Basically my dirty tone is taken care of sunn wise. Noticed I really dig the clean of my sceptre. It needs new caps and could maybe use a retube. Say I wanna get near some hiwatt esque clean tones, what would u guys recommend. Its the non mid boost model. Id like it to be more pedal friendly and chime a bit. I know speakers are gonna play a big part of this. Just looking tube wise and such. I'm in no rush to get this head runnin, as I have 2 that meet my needs. This is prob an overdub/studio head. Also, edbass, I totally spaced on the coliseum pa pix. Just hit me. Had some fam stuff come up that has absorbed me. I'm sorry.

Re-cap & re-tube to original specs, & see how it works for you; Sceptre is a really clean head. If yours has no mid boost, it likely has the tube rectifier, which may "sag" more than the later SS rect models, but still...it took some major pedal power to overdrive my Sceptre even a little. If chime is what you want try the bright channel.

Wow. Thanks for the dig up on what I thought a dead thread! That's basically my m.o. right now is what you said. Any suggestions on 6550s or kt88s for this beast? I wasn't too into JJs in my model t. But tastes change.

Speakers have a lot to do with the sound also.  Conrad used JBL's in his earlier amps.  Perhaps some JBL K-120's would be in order.....not the E-120's, they're too heavy.
