SunnSolarus Head input/output
« on: March 01, 2011, 10:39:14 am »
Hey guys, finally got a sunn solarus head unit, bought online from the US-shipped here (Australia)
It's apparently a 1968 model, which i'm inclined to believe.
Only had it for a couple days but haven't actually heard it yet because of two things i'm unsure of...

-I asked the seller to remove the tubes, and ship them bubble wrapped within the cavity so they arrived undamaged.
I've put them back in, just need to ensure they're in the correct positions. Maybe i could upload a photo and someone could just say yeah or no.

-Also being that i'm in australia our power runs at 240v, which is fine i'm looking at step down transformers online. My query regarding power is with the amp's input wattage. On the rear panel beneath the power chord there's a small plate...

117v alternating, 60hz, 115watts <<just double checking that this is the input specs as the 400watt label confused me being that i'd presumed this was a 50watt guitar head.
And what's the little connection beneath the 400watt label?

-Do i need to get a 500watt transformer or will an output of 200watt/300watt do the job?

It has a similar tube layout to my SingleRec and the seller had also listed the item as "VINTAGE 1968 SUNN SOLARUS TUBE GUITAR AMPLIFIER" which led me to presume it was a 50watt (output) guitar head.

-If this is 400watt and if i run it into my hiwatt cab will it fuck it? Here's my cab+mesa with the sunn solarus....

hope you can help me out

Hi there, the 117 Volt and 115 watts ratings are for North American AC use,the 400 Watt rating is for the 2 prong,(ungrounded) AC connector directly below it. A step down transformer from 240 AC to 117 would be ideal, with a 300VA rating, should be fine.Good luck,Mel.
