A 412 I may be buying...
« on: October 26, 2006, 10:20:31 pm »
So someone near me is selling a 70s 412 cabinet, all original.  He says it came with a 190L head.  Anyone know the specific ohm/watt ratings for such a cabinet?  He thinks it's an 8-ohm cab, and says the speakers have no markings, so i think they may be CTS.  Anyone have any ideas?

Check it with a VOM or a multimeter. That won't give you the actual impedance of the cabinet, but it will give you the resistance, which is generally just below but closest to the actual impedance of the cabinet. Is it the earlier tall 412 or the later square 412?

Thanks for the suggestion, Ed.  I'll check it out.  It's one of the square cabinets.

Also, the guy's not actually selling the 190L; that's just the head that this cab came with.  He says the speakers have no markings, so i think they're probably CTS.  I was just wondering if anyone knows of any difference between this cab and any other 412.  Basically, I want to make sure it can handle my 1200S.

I don't have much knowledge of the later square cabinets, but the AlNiCo 12's in my Sceptre don't handle high powered bass rigs very well, they bottom out pretty quick. What do the speakers in yours look like? Cast or stamped frames? Are the magnets square or round and what type of magnet? This sounds silly but, do they look beefy?
Also, which 1200S? The tube guitar amp or the SS bass amp?
I'd hook it up and see regardless, just kind of creep up on the power and don't blast them all at once, see what they do and if they work for your situation.

I'm actually also thinking of buying a 412S. Judging from picture it says the cabinet impedance is 4ohms, but my Sonaro and other heads are 8 or 16. I asked the seller and he has no idea either.
